Contact
us for information regarding this project for your
classroom
The
Misty Mountain Quilters' Guild hopes to encourage, in
children, an awareness and appreciation of quilts
by sharing books about quilting and by telling them
about the quilting process. Children's books featuring
quilts in the story, accompanied by little quilts
matching illustrations, will be provided by the guild.
Volunteers
will be available to read the stories to groups of
children, to answer questions about quilting, to give
special presentations, and to help the teacher plan and
carry out quilt-related classroom projects.
The
Storybook Quilts collection of books for students
kindergarten through sixth grade is diverse in subject
matter and reading levels. The books are about various
historical periods as well as current times. Various
cultures are represented in the books. In addition, the
books deal with a wide variety of themes such as moving
away, death of a grandparent, solving problems,
discrimination, family adjustments and cooperation.
The
Storybook Quilts collection includes books demonstrating
simple quilting activities, chapter books for older
children, professional books for teachers, ideas for
activities to use with the books, quilt designs to
color, hands on projects, etc. Age level
recommendations, summaries of the stories, topics for
discussion, and suggested vocabulary lists are given for
each book.
The
Misty Mountain Quilters' Guild hopes that the trunk of
quilts, books and activities will enhance the students'
education and appreciation of the quilting heritage

School Volunteers procedures for the Storybook
Quilt Project
School volunteers need to become familiar with the school's
procedures regarding visitors. Most schools
require volunteers to go directly to the office
and sign, often receiving a badge or sticker to
wear while in the school. They are invited
guests, where the teacher is in charge.
Volunteers are never left alone in the
classroom.
It is a good idea to call the school office the day before and
leave a message for the teacher to confirm the
time.
Always ask the teacher how much time they intend for the activity
to take. Remember the time limit as you are
working with the class. when in doubt, ask the
teacher how much longer you may continue.
Asking the children to save their comments and questions until
the end of the story will help. Plan to give the
students about five minutes at the end of the
story to ask questions.
When doing an activity, you will need to answer questions about
directions the students work. Ask the students
to save other questions until the end of the
activity.
If students ask you a question you do not know the answer to,
just say so. They understand that.
If you want to review the book before you read it, ask the
teacher to leave the book in the media center.
This enables you to go early to become familiar
with the story.
On your first visit to the school, it is a good idea to arrive a
little early. You never know what kind of delays
may occur.
Always show the pictures as you read the book. If some children
are in the back and are having difficulty seeing
the book, tell them that they will get to look
at the book after you finish reading the story.
If quilting terms are used in the book, take a
few minutes to define the terms. Look for any
other vocabulary that may be unfamiliar to the
students and review those words with the
students. It is best to show the little quilt
after you have read the book. If you have other
small sample blocks, take those to share with
the students.
You might want to check with the teacher to determine if the
class might like to do one of the suggested
activities that go with the book. If the teacher
wants to plan one of the activities, she might
like you to help with the activity.
Most import of all, relax, have fun, and look forward to your
next visit. |
