Committee Reports:

Minutes from MMQG General Meeting 1-23-2012

Meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm by Marilyn Hixson, 1st Vice President, in the absence of Beverly Adkins, President, who is currently out of town.

10 guests were welcomed and introduced to members.

Motion made and seconded to accept the December minutes as presented in the Scrapbag. Minutes accepted.

Marilyn announced that the Treasurer’s report is now part of the slide presentation for members to review. If anyone wants to see printed copy, one is available for review.

Sally Barker announced that the Beginners’ Class will start in April on Thursdays at the Sharp Memorial Church in Young Harris. Students will learn the basics from start to finish and make a sampler quilt in the process.  She said this is a No Stress, gently guided opportunity to learn. Cost is $20 plus book cost.

Ruth McKinley showed the Japanese Lantern Quilt that will be taught at the February Sewcial by Dolores Knight.  Jar Quilts that were on display will be taught in April. Check the website for listing of upcoming sewcials.

Beverly Gibson reviewed GA Quilt Council Spring Convention to be held on 3-17-12.  You must be registered as a member by 3-1-12 to attend.  MMQG will host GA Quilt Council 10-20-12 and there will be a class offered by Cindy Brick 10-19-12. To have your name on the Council Register you must join by February.

Linda Gorman talked about the Quilts of Valor retreat she recently attended where they completed over 90 quilts.  She is still working on organizing a group of MMQG members interested in Valor Quilts.  She has a sign up sheet to fill out what you would be interested in helping with.  Also, they will have a meeting on 1-31-12 at the Mountain Presbyterian Church at 10 am for those interested to get the group organized.

Marilyn talked about the festivals. Nancy Gillis will be in charge of the cabin at both Summer and Fall Georgia Mountain Fairs.   If a MMQG committee group is interested in a festival for raising money for their cause or committee by raffling a quilt or other item, they can see Marilyn.  Hugs and Kisses have scheduled the Butternut Creek Festival.  We will not be selling items made by members at the festivals.

Nancy Jensen is the chair for the nominating committee this year to nominate a new President, 1st Vice President and Treasurer.  Please make your recommendations to Nancy over the upcoming months.

People attending this year’s retreat should please stay for a short meeting after the general meeting for Jennille Martin to review things with everyone attending.

MMQG denim shirts are in. If you ordered one, please see Anna Stone.

A change of by-law for moving the General Meeting date from the 4th Monday to the 4th Tuesday was presented.  The subcommittee from the board that developed the presentation consisted of Rosemary Walker, Joanie McGee, Diane Banakas, Sally Barker and Marilyn Hixson. Sally explained to members that the church conducts a daycare Monday, Wednesday and Friday and because of this it is becoming more difficult for MMQG to continue to meet on Mondays due to time restraints.  We cannot access the church any earlier than 1 pm which makes it more and more difficult to get our program speakers set up, the hostess to get things set up, as well as all the other committees that set up for the general meetings.   Other locations were researched by the committee and it was found that the United Methodist Church currently being used is the best location for our guild.  There are few places that can accommodate our guild which at some meetings consists of up to 120 people.  Kitchens were not adequate at other locations along with parking.  Also, many other locations do not have the table and chairs already set up as we have at this church.  The issue of change was opened to the floor for questions:

If decided to move to Tuesdays when would this take effect?

Answer:  It has not been exactly determined as of yet, but the earliest would be March Meeting.

If the date is being moved can members request the time also be changed to an earlier meeting time?  Answer:  Was not originally considered but can be reviewed by the board.  Marilyn asked for an unofficial show of hands of how many members would like to move the time up and there was an overwhelming show of hands to do so. Marilyn said this would be taken under advisement at the next board meeting.

Would this affect the program speakers that we already have paid and scheduled for this year?  Answer:   No money would be lost and no speakers would be a problem.  The only issue may be with Pat Knoechel, but they are still working with each other to figure out a schedule that may work.

If changed this would affect the Tuesday Strippers.  If meeting too early in the day they may not be able to meet and still attend meeting.

Answer: The board had already talked to Strippers and they were okay with day changing to Tuesday, but being meeting time was not discussed they may need to revisit with them.

Can Thursday be an option for meeting date?

Answer: No, Oasis meets on Thursdays.

Was new chamber building in Blairsville considered?

Answer: It was considered.  However, they do not allow scheduling for a monthly meeting.

According to Article 13 of the by-laws, to change the by-laws a 30 day notice is given to members and posted on the Scrap bag and then the vote will be taken at next month’s (February) meeting.  Today’s meeting is considered to members as the 30 day notice. If there were additional questions, please feel free to call or email Marilyn.

Program: “THREAD JAZZ FOR QUILTING AND EMBELLISHING - Needle and Thread Know-How presented by Nancy Sapin from Sulky of America.  Nancy showed many projects that can be made using Sulky products and talked about the various types of threads, needles, and stabilizers.   She explained the difference between variegated and blendable threads and reminded us that the higher the thread number the thinner the thread, just the opposite of numbers on needles.   Various weights of threads and how they can be used for different effects were discussed.   She said that needles are the 2nd most important thing next to our sewing machines and that a needle should be changed after 6-8 hours of sewing time.  It is important to use the correct type of needle to match the type of thread being used.  It was a very informative program.  Sulky handed out information packets along with a spool of their newest thread. They also donated a number of door prizes.

The Sulky Raffle (basket of products) was won by Marta Myers.
Fat Quarter Raffle (black and white or combination of) was won by Carleen Brock.
Drawing for Raffle Table held.
Show and Tell.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 3:35 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Godfrey, Secretary
