Quiltfest Wrap Up

Quiltfest 2011 is history.  What a great show!  The positive comments (and there were lots) made all the hard work worth it.  The decorations (Martha Elliott and Grace Oakley) set the fall mood.  The admissions workers (headed by Nancy Gillis and Flo Campbell) received compliments on their friendliness and helpfulness.  Midge O’Conner helped us get started collecting door prize before she left for the summer and Betty Ireland and Martha Neher put them together.  Frances Allen and Carleen Brock took care of ticket sales for the raffle quilt (designed by Peggy James, stitched by Darlene Barnes and her committee, quilted by Appalachian Quilting).

Silent Auction was headed by Betty Babinsky and Anne Horne.  Proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity.    Kendra King and Melodee Hoeltke did a fantastic job with the Boutique.  The number of items and the display were awesome.

Connie Tackett and Joyce Schultz and their team were responsible for registering the quilts, receiving the quilts for judging and for returning the quilts to their owner after the show.  The whole process worked like a well oiled machine.

Once the quilts were registered, the program was put together by Sally Barker who also took care of printing the winners list once judging was finished.  The sponsor ads were solicited by Joanne Olson who collected $2400 in sponsor money from local businesses.

The Judging Room was handled by Nancy Jensen and Sue Royal.  This duo also had their workers well organized.  There were over 200 quilts to be judged in a day and a half.

The ribbons on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and honorable mention quilts in each category were made by Scottie Blumke and her committee.  Over 500 hours were spent embroidering and putting together these beautiful ribbons.

Katie Dawes, B.J. Foster and their team of hostesses answered viewer’s questions and assisted with turning quilts for a closer look.

Cheryl Powell was responsible for the First Aid, whose workers were also the elevator operators. Connie Cobb recruited the 16 vendors. Martha Batchelor did the interior signs.

Nancy Smith did a great job of getting the Quiltfest in the local papers and in magazines.  Lydia Bradley got the show on various websites (NQA, GA Quilt Council, guild websites etc.) Nancy was also the key person for getting our 4 new banners made.

The lovely memorial to our sisters of the cloth, Mary Jenkins, Jean Meadows and Pat Crick was put together by Scottie Blumke.

The new stands were a project of the unofficial “MMQG Auxiliary”.  Dan Lachmiller (the unofficial co-chair of this show), Steve Olson, John Adkins and their helpers did a great job constructing the stands and bases.

Thank you to all the wives who brought their husbands to help set up and take down.   Three days went into setting up the main floor.  Two hours to take down and return everything to the storage unit.  It was fantastic to have so many hands to help.

Told you it takes a village.  All the chairs mentioned had dozens of people to help them.  Thank you to all who worked so hard to make the show a success.

Volunteers from the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild met at the First United Methodist Church in Blairsville, GA, on February 8 to make plans for

teaching quilting to Union County Elementary fifth grade students in Ms. Becky Hughes' class. Fabrics and supplies were assembled and dates
of instruction discussed.  The students will each construct a ten inch block of four squares each.  The sewing will be done by hand, with students
choosing their own colors and combinations.   Quilting involves math, measuring, planning, with art and color involvement.  After four to six
sessions, the quilt will  be finished and hung in the Union County Elementary School. This service , through the Guild's "Storybook Quilts"  Program is available to schools in Cherokee and Clay Counties in North Carolina as well as Union and Towns Counties in Georgia.
