Quilt of Valor Presented to Bill Cross"Quilt of Valor" Presented to Bill Cross, War Veteran

At the July 25th meeting of the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild, held at the First United Methodist Church of Union County, William (Bill) Cross, Veteran of World War II, was given a "Quilt of Valor".  The red, white and blue quilt was presented by Linda Gorman, who constructed the quilt and Diane Simonsen, a long time friend. Mr. Cross was born in 1915 in Monticello, New York. He served in World War II in the Fourth Armored Division under General George Patton. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and even met Patton.
"The quilt represents the respect, gratitude and honor we have for our war Veterans."

Ms. Greene, a charter member of the Guild, demonstrated hand quilting techniques. Her hat had a sign "Have you Bean to Blairsville?"

After several hours of work at the Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville,  twenty-five members of the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild produced sixty-nine soft and sturdy pet beds.
A few of the beds will be sold at the "Putting on the Dog" Auction in September, but most are available for purchase in the Thrift Store, newly located on Welborne Street, across from the Civic Center.
The beds are in small, medium, and large sizes,  suitable for dogs or cats, and are washable.  Store Manager Tricia Spear planned the project with Guild member Dorna Riley, and Ms. Tackett and Ms. Lachmiller recruited more volunteers to make the beds.   According to Ms. Riley, "people need quilts and dogs and cats need beds".

Marta Myers, Chairperson of the "HUGS AND KISSES Project of the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild

Hugs and KissesProudly holds a quilt top recently completed from fabrics donated to the guild. Four counties, Union, Towns in Georgia and Cherokee and Clay in North Carolina, received quilts which are Kisses and Hugsgiven to children to comfort them in times of crisis. An average of three hundred quilts a year are taken to seven family and children service centers. Marta stresses that this is possible because of the generous donations of money and cotton fabrics to the Guild from estates, members and the public. Countless, but rewarding volunteer hours are spent by members in making the cheerful and cozy quilts for boys and girls from infancy through teen years.

The Tri-County Community College in Peachtree, North Carolina, conducted "Super Saturdays" on campus for children in grades three through eight. Many types of classes were offered in March, including "Learning to Quilt". Members of the Misty Mountain Quilters Guild met with boys and girls for three Saturday mornings to receive instruction in operating a sewing machine, sewing straight lines, and putting blocks together. Pre-cut kits were assembled by the teachers, using "Snowball" and "Four-Patch" patterns. Members of the Guild involved in the classes were Beverly Adkins, of Hayesville, NC; Pat Meinecke and Louise MacDonald, of Brasstown, NC; and Bunnie McKnew, Jane Mills, and Alice Russell, of Blairsville, GA.

Storybook Quilts
   STORYBOOK QUILTS

Through the Storybook Quilt Program, Misty Mountain Quilters Guild hopes to encourage, in children, awareness and appreciation of quilts by sharing books about quilting and telling them about the quilting process. Trunks have been placed in Union and Towns County, Georgia and in Clay and Cherokee County, North Carolina. They are featuring a collection of children's books about quilts. Each book has a little quilt made to go with the book. The program is for grades Kindergarten through Sixth grade.  Teacher's professional books and a teacher's guide are included in the trunk.
