New Members and Visitor Information
Misty Mountain Quilters Guild
has approximately 160 members,
most of whom live in either Clay or Cherokee counties in North
Carolina or Fannin, Towns or Union counties in Georgia. The range
of knowledge for these quilters is from beginners to very
experienced in areas which include piecing, applique', foundation
piecing, three-dimensional quilting, landscapes, embroidery, hand
quilting, and/or machine quilting.
General
Guild Meetings
occurs on the 4th Monday of each month, except June and December, 1
pm at the United Methodist Church of Union County located just west
of Blairsville on GA76 in the Fellowship Hall. Meetings have a
business segment and a program segment. During the program portion,
speakers share their knowledge of quilting with the members. In
June officers are installed at a pot-luck luncheon meeting on the
4th Monday. In December a pot-luck luncheon is held for a Christmas
get-together on the 2nd Monday. No general Guild Meeting occurs in
either June or December. Prior to each general meeting is a social
time that starts at 12:30 pm.
Sewcials are held the 2nd Monday of each month, except
December, at All Saints Lutheran Church located east of Blairsville
on GA76. Typically a guild member shares her/his knowledge on some
aspect of quilting during the sewcials with all who attend. All
guild members are encouraged to come and learn new skills or share
their skills with others. You do not have to participate in the
topic being taught. You may bring your own project and work on it
and socialize with everyone. This activity is a good way to meet
the other guild members. Sewcials are generally from 10 am until 2
or 3 pm. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy this activity.
Workshops:
During the year the guild offers several workshops on various
topics. Sometimes the workshop will be led by the program speaker
for that month and is then held on the Tuesday after the general
guild meeting. At other times the workshops may be taught on a topic
that requires meetings for one day a week for several weeks. This is
typical of workshops held to teach beginning or intermediate
quilting. Sometimes the workshop is a one-day class taught by a
guild member on some topic with which that member has experience.
Usually workshops are held at All Saints Lutheran Church located
east of Blairsville on GA76 from 10 am until 3 pm. There is a fee
for workshops and sometimes additional costs could occur from
purchasing books, tools, or materials for the workshop. Check with
the workshop chairperson to signup for any workshops.
Tuesday Quilt Group, also known as the Tuesday Strippers,
meets each Tuesday at Mountain Presbyterian Church located east of
Blairsville on GA76 from 9:30 am until 3 pm. This group is a subset
of the guild where participants bring any project that they want to
work on. It is a great way to get help sandwiching a quilt or learn
from your fellow quilters. Those who attend consider it to be
therapy that helps us get through the rest of the week. This group
is made up of people who sincerely want to help you learn to love
quilting as much as they do. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy learning
more about your sisters of the cloth.
NC MMQG Quilters
meet at the First United Methodist Church in
Murphy, NC from 10 am until 2 pm each Thursday to quilt together on
their individual projects. All NC quilters are invited. Bring a sack
lunch and enjoy learning more about your sisters of the cloth.
Project Hugs and Kisses is MMQG's equivalent of Project Linus.
Quilts are made by MMQG members and donated to people in need in our
two-state area. Hugs and Kisses has also donated quilts to
Hurricane Relief Survivors in the Gulf Coast, new families as they
move into a Habitat for Humanity house, and the Women’s Enrichment
Center.
Storybook Quilts
is a project to get children’s books about quilts into the classroom
in NC and GA. Trunks have been made up of member-donated books and
small quilts or quilt blocks. The trunks are in schools in Towns
and Union Counties in Georgia and Cherokee and Clay Counties in
North Carolina. Guild members, upon request from the schools, will
talk to classes about the quilting process and do demonstrations.
A Quilting Retreat is held each year in February. The
retreat lasts 3 days, during which guild members instruct others in
a wide range of quilting skills. Each year there are different
instructors and different topics. Those who attend the retreat pay
for room and board at the Lodge and a small fee for each class which
they choose to take.
Misty Mountain Quilt Show is held during odd numbered years,
e.g. 2005 or 2007, during the 3rd weekend of October. The show
usually has up to 150 quilts which range in size from bed quilts to
miniatures within several quilting categories. Quilts are judged;
ribbons and monetary awards are given for winners. The show has a
Mini-Quilt Silent Auction which raises funds for a local charity, a
boutique filled with items made by guild members, a donation quilt
and several vendors. A large number of guild members are involved
in making the quilt show a success.
The MMQG website is here, where the Electronic Scrapbag, our
monthly newsletter is located. It is published each month,
typically by Saturday after the monthly guild meeting. The website
is
mistymountainquiltguild.com. The Scrapbag is also
published in a hardcopy form and mailed to members who prefer to
have it. The website has more information about the guild and its
members, so please enjoy browsing it.
