The

Mountain Quilter’s Guild was
held at the First United
Methodist Church in Blairsville,
Georgia on Monday, June 23,
2008. The meeting was called to
order at 12:30pm by President
Margaret Shattles. Margaret
welcomed 75 members and 8
guests.
Max
Barlow recognized those being
remembered in our Celebration of
Life Recognition, and then gave
the blessing. Kay Long and
Martha Barker thanked everyone
for all the wonderful food
brought to share and the annual
June luncheon began.
Announcements were made by
outgoing president, Margaret
Shattles. The Minutes as they
appeared in the ScrapBag were
approved as published. Beverly
Adkins presented the Treasurer’s
report. She also reported that
the Guild’s books have been
audited and are in order. The
Guild has a working balance of
$8,211.15
Diane Remsen briefly spoke about
the upcoming retreat. She urged
members who would like to attend
but did not get on the initial
list of 72 attendees to put
their name on the waiting list.
She also informed the group that
most of the information about
the retreat will be delivered
via e-mail. The Retreat
Planning Committee consists of
Margaret Shattles, Nancy Donegan
and Diane Remsen. Attendees
were asked to inform the
committee if they are reserving
a room by themselves or with
other members.
Dolores Knight reported on
Sewcials. The upcoming Sewcial
will be on July 14th
and will be a Paper Foundation
Star Class taught by Delores
Knight. In August the Sewcial
program will be a Christmas
project taught by Beverly
Adkins.
Sally
Barker presented the proposed budget
for the coming fiscal year. The
proposed budget will be more public
and accessible to the membership and
will comply will our new by-laws.
Sally directed the group to consider
the one-time incorporation fee of
$1,500 which will entitle us to file
with the IRS as a tax exempt
organization. A committee
consisting of Sally Barker, Beverly
Adkins and Margaret Shattles met
with tax attorney, Jennifer Chapman
to discuss this matter. Our
vulnerability to liability was a
major concern of the group. The
cost to maintain this status will be
$30 per year. The Executive
Committee reviewed this matter and
approved presenting it to the
general membership for
consideration. Sally opened the
discussion to the membership. Dorna
Riley raised an objection about
cutting the Project Hugs & Kisses
budget by $50 due to the rising cost
of quilt batting. Sally informed
the group that the reduction was
approved by the project coordinator
and will be made up by a $50 award
from the Georgia Mountain Fair for
decorating a booth. As there were
no further comments or questions the
membership voted unanimously to
accept the proposed budget as
presented.
Diane
Simonsen presided over the
installation of new officers. The
newly elected officers are: Sally
Barker - President; Beverly Adkins -
Treasurer; and Maureen Ripper - 1st
Vice President.
Outgoing President, Margaret
Shattles was thanked by the group
for her 2 years of dedicated service
to the group. Jean Meadows
presented Margaret with a beautiful
handmade basket filled with fat
quarters as a token of
appreciation. Outgoing 1st
Vice President Judy Haller was also
given a handmade basket as a thank
you for her past 2 years of
service. The current Executive
Committee were asked to stand and
were applauded by the group.
Marta
Myers thanked everyone who worked on
Project Hugs & Kisses. She stated
that “love never fails. We do it
for the kids.” She presented a
“runway” of recently made quilts.
She urged the group to continue to
work on these quilts in order that
she will have a “store house” of
quilts available for distribution as
needed.
A
lively Show & Tell was followed by
the distribution of door prizes and
the raffle. Prior to the
distribution of the prizes the
membership was informed that the
Executive Committee discussed the
guidelines for the distribution of
prizes and the decision was made to
reaffirm the policy stating you must
be present to win a prize. The
meeting was adjourned at 2:20pm by
newly elected President, Sally
Barker.
Respectfully submitted,
Diane Remsen,
Secretary
